Sonya B

(she/her)
MÖV Classic, MÖV Fit

Sonya brings steady focus and strength to her classes at MÖV. Her teaching style is heavily influenced by her commitment to studying the roots and philosophy of yoga, and you can feel that energy every time she holds the teacher seat.

In her class, you’ll be challenged physically and mentally, and you’ll feel her appreciation for her students, to whom she says, “Thank you for letting me learn from you. You are my teachers.”

How did you find your way to yoga?

I started my personal yoga practice about 12 years ago when I found myself in a pretty destructive place and reached to hot yoga to shift my habits and lifestyle choices. At the time, I was still living in New York and a studio opened near my apartment so I began a regular and daily practice. When we moved to Minneapolis a couple of years later, I knew I would be okay when I found a similar yoga community.

What should we know about your background?

The classic, held-posture sequence aligns with my belief system that yoga should be inclusive and accessible, so I spent the majority of March 2023 in Nicaragua for teacher training. I have immeasurable gratitude for all of my mentors who celebrated my decision to take training and gently nudged me along until I saw in myself what they saw in me.

Aside from yoga, what interests do you have?

I love to travel and crave new experiences – it suits my curious and independent nature. One of my favorite destinations was Egypt where I had an eye-opening and fascinating experience! I also enjoy staying home these days where I feel the most grounded. When we have the time, my family visits a farmhouse in WI where we canoe, hike, bike, get our water from a natural spring, and pick all of the food we eat from an organic farm. We spend our nights stargazing and I deeply cherish that time where I can unplug and peacefully be with my kids, all without demands or distractions.

I am also honored to offer students the opportunity to participate in our Simpson House partnership and continue their practice off their mat by cooking and serving meals to the Simpson shelter guests. Simpson Housing Services is a Minneapolis non profit dedicated to housing, supporting, and advocating for people experiencing homelessness. The details of this volunteer opportunity can be found on the class schedule or by talking to me. I look forward to cooking and serving with you!
